Minister Daniel flags human-wildlife conflict, sand mining and fires as key environmental challenges

Minister of environment and tourism Indileni Daniel has outlined key challenges facing her ministry, including human-wildlife conflict, sand mining, veld fires, and limited biodiversity market access.

She highlighted the many challenges her ministry is still faced with at the Government Information Centre on Thursday.

Daniel listed a number of problems that remain in need of attention in spite of recent achievements, such as training wildlife protection officers and dehorning 62 rhinos to deter poaching.

These include a rising trend of human-wildlife conflict and ongoing wildlife crime.

She also listed unregulated sand mining, inadequate infrastructure for international meetings and conventions that could be highly beneficial, potential trophy import bans, and waste management concerns, as well as uncontrolled veld fires and the expansion of agricultural projects in the vicinity of national parks.

Further, market access for biodiversity-based products remains limited.

“The ministry remains committed to addressing these challenges through strategic interventions, policy enhancements, and strengthened collaboration with stakeholders to ensure long-term sustainability and economic benefits for Namibia,” Daniel stated.
