Prominent outdoorsman killed by lion

Bernd Kebbel, a well-known Namibian businessman and nature lover, was killed by a lioness in the Kunene region on Friday morning.

Kebbel was camping with his wife and a group of friends in the Hoanib River near Hoanib Skeleton Coast Camp in the Sesfontein area.

It is reported that he was climbing down from the rooftop of his tent when he was attacked by a lioness.

Ndeshipanda Hamunyela, a spokesperson for the ministry of environment, confirmed that while his friends were able to chase the animal off, he had already died.

In addition to being the former owner of the Outdoor Centre, Kebbel was well known in desert lion researcher circles.

Namibian police spokesperson inspector Immanuel Iiduwa confirmed that a case of human-wildlife conflict had been opened and that police were at the scene.
